Villa and Trullo Gioia

IMG_5681

We have always been very careful in choosing our holiday locations, trying to find places that reflect the local culture. When we had our first holiday in Puglia, we were delighted to find that the traditions and lifestyle of the local people were still being so genuinely upheld.  It really did feel like a different way of life from the manic workload at home.  We love the bustling markets, the open friendliness of the people, the many festivals with music and fireworks, the way the whole town seems to take to the streets for an evening promenade or sit on their doorsteps to chat with the neighbours.  It’s a real celebration of life.  Even though our holidays here go by far too quickly, we always return to the UK feeling refreshed and relaxed.

The villa has some very unique features, being built and owned by an admiral in the Italian Navy.  It was constructed to a very high standard with fully tiled floors, hand painted tiles in the conservatory and a very special glistening plaster finish to some of the walls and ceilings.  You will also notice a few nautical features such as the brass wall lights in the dining area.  Having the original trulli cone building attached adds extra character to the property, both inside and out.

We don’t claim to offer 5 star accommodation at Villa Gioia, the luxury for us is in having so much space to enjoy. All this, added to the proximity of airports and so many fantastic places to visit, the food, the wine and the culture, makes Villa Gioia, for us, the perfect holiday location.  Due to ongoing changes to Covid rules and regulations we are not currently renting out Villa Gioia but hopefully in coming years we will be able to invite guests back again.

About Us

We are Ali and Iain McLachlan and we would like to thank you for visiting our Villa Gioia website.

Having considered buying a holiday home for many years, we couldn’t be happier with our home in Puglia.  We bought Villa Gioia in June 2009 so we are still making it our own, a bit like “painting the Fourth Bridge”.

Food (OK….and wine!) has always been a big part of our holiday enjoyment. Puglia is a food and wine lovers’ paradise.  Restaurants are in abundance and the range is wide, from take away pizza and rotisserie chicken to Michelin star restaurants.  We also love to cook for ourselves, especially outdoors, so our wood oven and BBQ were an essential box to tick when we looked for a home.  The local produce is fresh and seasonal, seafood can be purchased locally in the towns or straight from the fishermen at the coastal villages.  We are spoilt for choice and we love it.
